Jessica Abernethy Fashions at StyleWeek Providence

StyleWeek featured work by 16 designers whose work was selected by a jury. The evening show I attended was packed with people decked out in flashy 'statement attire.' The whole room was pulsing with energy. What brought me to this show was the work of Providence native Jessica Abernethy, who designs and makes women's fashion by hand. Abernethy, who studied design and pattern making in Germany, specializes in custom designs, including wedding gowns. Continue Reading...

A very model of a working woman

Fashion designer Jessica Abernethy of Providence opens the door and leads Frazier into her bright white studio. Towers of colorful fabric take up space against the walls, and tables with pins, scissors and sewing materials cover the remaining area. Abernethy rolls out a portable rack of newly created designs and hands Frazier an assortment of rompers and mix-and-match pieces. Continue Reading...

Style Week Finale – DePaulo Abernethy and Peters

I wonder if my delay in writing my final review for Style Week Providence was based on the fact that I’m a little sad for it to end. It was an extraordinary week of fashion, fun, and networking that was a wonderful experience for Providence. But, alas, the reviews are ready. Continue Reading...

Japan Jump Starts 2008 With Fashion For Dogs

Even though the Year of the Dog won't actually be coming around again until 2018, in Japan, where there are more dogs than children under the age of 12, it's always the Year of the Dog! So, no surprise that in Tokyo last week there was a New Year Dog Party that lasted two days! And because Japanese people spend more than $10 billion a year on their pets, the world-class designers of canine couture were more than happy to participate. Continue Reading...

In Tokyo, High Fashion Is Going to the Dogs

TOKYO -- Flaunting a neon-green wig and red-and-black vest, the model sashayed down the runway to the beat of Baha Men's "Who Let the Dogs Out?" Then, rather than pose for the photographers, she turned tail and sniffed the floor, before being whisked away by her handler. Continue Reading...
